POSITIVE Makes me realize the importance of privacy The homework descriptions are pretty clear Course material is really good I like this class I genuinely enjoy this class. I appreciate the technical information being given in laymen terms. I makes it easy to truly understand what the bigger issues and picture are. I believe it is important for all of us to know this information I really enjoyed watching the documentary and looking into the different aspects of opec Huge connections with our lives gives me better understanding of the world Everyone feels relaxed during the class and the ambience is good I like how we expose ways that we as consumers are targeted I really enjoy learning about online privacy and what privacy means to us I enjoyed the Digital Dossier assignment I have enjoyed the topics we discuss in class. We learn things that everybody that uses technology wonders about but doesn’t know where to go for facts. I feel much more knowledgable about what information I am giving out to other than I did before taking this class. I actually really enjoy everything about this class, learning about how much of a “digital footprint” we leave is honestly crazy. Pretty muche verything I’ve been learning is new and fun for me. This class opens my eyes to how my privacy is always taken advantage of. I like that this class shows how my privacy is violated but also how I can prevent it. I enjoy seeing how topics relate to reality, having real life examples and comparisons really help understand concepts. This class does a good job in employing information in regards to helping me better me, to better my internet security. The fact that we aren’t as secure as we think we are has become increasingly eye opening. You ease into each lecture thus making the time go by faster. The assignments are really similar to what we discuss in class and at the same time add to increase our knowledge on each subject. I like that the assignments are manageable and refreshing. I enjoy the pace of this class. The assignments are straightforward and relevant. I prefer projects and assignments as opposed to exams. I like how clear the assignments are and how helpful Shaheen is when it comes to answering questions. Learning and becoming more aware of the data that is out there on me. Before taking this class I never put thought into the information that can be found about me. I really enjoy learning how we are personally affected. I liked the depth of going over how data is manipulated and how. It is used in different fields of every day life. I think the subject matter is very relevant and interesting especially to college aged adults Timely response and helpful teacher and TA whenever I have questions Cyberstalking and digital dossiers made me even more conscious about what I put online and can find out My favorite subject so far was Edward Snowden. I would like to know more about the implications and specifics of what he did. I love TED Talks and reading relevant articles from NYTimes. I like feeling up to date. I enjoy the topics in this class and questions posed! One of my favorite things about this class is going through how companies can be clever when using your data to profit off of - I find that really fascinating This class helps me to understand what the world looks like in the media and it also reminds me the importance and existence of privacy. What aspects of the imbalances brought by the mass media and negative effect it could bring to the public and the internet users I learned a lot about people’s privacy is not safe as we think. When the network intervenes in our lives, it replaces a lot of things. Such as we chat online media and entertainment people should understand intervenes data are easy to be shared I like the examples used to describe various concepts and views on cybersecurity issues. I feel like it makes the class more interesting as well as understanding concepts easier I like that you are thorough with your explanation of things A positive thing that I enjoy about this class is that everything we learn is interesting and relevant to me. The digital dossier assignment was a lot of fun in my opinion because everyone uses social media in today’s society. So ti was cool to be able to see what info there was online about me or a friend or even a family member. I enjoy learning about how public my information is. The class where we learned about metadata really stood out to me because it revealed out much social media has on you, and how frequently they are tracking One thing that I really like to learn about in this class is the outlandish ideas that companies use concerning data like the google barge and the data mining techniques I like when we come together in groups and find articles and situations that relate to the topic we’re discussing. This course has been extremely eye opening as to how much is tracked and what that means for all of us. I never knew all of the implications of the information that we’re producing constantly. So it has been beneficial and made me aware. The material is very interesting especially looking at the trade-offs between privacy and easy of use. Also presented in a way that prompts thinking This class really makes visible something interesting. It is talking about things we ignored before. One thing I found interesting are the different ways society reacts to privacy scandals about corporations. It is interesting to see how people will educate themselves on topics they know little about in order to ensure they aren’t being taken advantage of. This class gives me that knowledge. I really enjoy learning about how the internet operates and some of the security implications. So far I like this class because I get insight into the technical aspects of how my information moves through the web. I have enjoyed the teaching side and movies you’e had us watch. This class is very interesting. NEGATIVE D2l organization is unclear, a lot of clutter like old archived PDFs - sometimes confusing what is important. One thing that I don’t like about this class is that the d2l site was poorly organized. I couldn’t find slides for most of the lectures and I’m not sure which readings are mandatory or optional. It isn’t clear what the role of the online readings is and what is actually required of them. d@l at times can be confusing in a accessing some of our class information. Some assignments are also at times close to see and keep me from staying on top of this is frustrating. Maybe add one specific folder full of slides. I thought this was going to be a coding class! Sometimes it is hard to follow since I am not tech savvy (I think this course is actually achieving higher than my expectations!) More actively and videos in class. I’m a visual learner and these slides are sometimes difficult! I find the class somewhat repetitive as I feel that we go over the same stuff sometimes. I’m very interested in going deeper into the deep dark web. Personally I find the slides difficult for note-taking. I seems there are many points on each slide that aren’t necessary for note-taking. The same goes for the open-ended questions on slides. Plenty of them that muddy up the slides that may just be better implemented as instructor notes. I would like to see more implications and technologies of security and a little less policy. I was expecting to learn how to do a little hacking/spying myself! I would like to hear more about the professional world of cybersecurity. I would like a guest speaker from a data collection agency or consultant to speak about digital privacy. I feel like it is hard to tell whether or not something is important enough to make note of. I find that sometimes slides are a big loaded with information and I don’t have time to write it all down. Sometimes the directions in assignments are wordy and confusing. Bullet points and concise wording helps me to stay focused. So far the “second half” about how big data works has felt superficial but I came in with an understanding of big data so it may be helpful for folks with no background. We cover a lot of things and different topics but we only scratch the surface. I know a lot of this is due to time constraints but maybe there could be a few topics of the many covered that get a much deeper dive. Group assignments sound good in theory but it would be a lot easier if t was just included in the lecture slides and would take less time to allow us to talk about stuff. Often too much content in one slides - Go through slides too quick - Some concepts get rushed through. During class I find that we go over the material too fast so I sometimes get lost but I do love how you always produce examples those always help. Assignments ask for very personal information and I do not know where to draw the line of important to include and also okay for inclusion in the assignment I think we should have more chances having group activities in the class. Each of us have more chance to show their ideas I couldn’t think of anything negative! Instead of writing attendance quizzes on paper we should make use of technology available and allow submissions on D2l. I think this class would be better if it was more interactive and the professor didn’t go lecture slide to lecture slide the entire class time. I do with the class was a little more interactive and discussion based, so we could get more healthy debates going. I don’t like the busywork associated with some assignments. The privacy journal was 3000 words and 9 pages of writing what I already know. Also I felt ironically like this was a breach of privacy telling you everything I did. That’s weird. One thing that I didn’t enjoy was the privacy journal report. I don’t think that the paper requirement should’ve been 1500 words just because I feel I didn’t have enough information tot all about for that long I wish there were more in class activities besides the quiz. An activity that goes along with the lessons we learned that day to help keep us more engaged with the class. I believe we are not given enough opportunity to apply what we know/learned during lecture. There could be smaller writing samples assigned in order to reiterate what we learned and better understand it ourselves. In the class I think we could delve deeper into the greater effects certain cases like Cambridge Analytica has on the government (legal) side of cybersecurity. Qs How do individuals protect their privacy? How can I protect data in the cloud from getting taken or hacked into? What can I do right now to ensure a little more privacy? How can we protect ourselves online more? How can you best protect yourself from stalkers online? How can you stay “off the grid”? How do we protect our privacy? What is the best way to do it? How do we protect the information that is out there? How does the dark web work? I can’t wait to learn more about it! What can we do to protect ourselves a bit more from cyberspying? What is hacking and why does it matter? How can hackers access data and what do they do with it? Why is it such a big deal? What is the history/background of hacking? What made you choose to go into the technology field? Can we learn more about encryption? I would like to know about security flaws of certain encryption such as PGP or security flaws of networks in general. I wish encryption was talked about tmore. What is the dark web and is it as shady of a place as I have heard? What is the deep web and why is it described as so terrifying? How would cybersecurity apply to media information that can be useful as a skills in the future job related to the course? Could humankind survive without technology? How can we as students and future professionals make an impact on privacy rules and regulations? Do we even have a chance or voice? Is it too late to turn in the Digital Dossier and Privacy Journal? Will we talk about Citizenfour? I really enjoyed the documentary and would love to hear if you have more recommendations. The new LG smartphone can unlock by reading the blood vessels in your hand or something like that. I’m wondering if more of our biological data like this will become part of the other data being tracked about us? What are data companies doing to prevent being regulated? Just lobbying? How much can the government trace us? Are there any books/journals that you suggest us to take a look at in relation to class content? What’s the difference between privacy and public? What insights can you give to someone interested in studying cybersecurity further? Will we learn more in depth about how Apple phones and computers can access microphones and cameras to see what we’re doing? Are we going to watch/learn about more real stories that took place in relation to privacy, like the Edward Snowden case for example? Can we focus on the intersections of people who code and the business side of the same company? How does data mining vary in different nations? Do other nations spy more or less on their own people than we do ours? What about taking data directly from other nations? I want to know how easy it is for hackers to get personal information on you. More specifically very private info like location, phone calls, texts, etc. What happens if we allow all the companies to collect all the data they want? What do we have to look forward to for the rest of semester? What topics do you as an instructor enjoy taking “deep dives” into? What topics do you think are most exciting to talk about?
