Environmental collapse, recession, pandemic, states of emergency and urgency: crisis forms the backdrop of science today and deeply impacts our ability to build big data sets about our planet that are consistent and usable. The marine sciences have been especially hit, as efforts at quality control and maintenance were paused, downscaled, or discontinued in the recent years, leaving working instruments like detritus in water and leaving critical questions concerning the sustainability of big data projects.
